This is one of the promises that I continue to ‘go back to.’  When I start getting new ideas and the energy is high…my enthusiasm is high and I start moving and promising and decisions start coming quickly.  It’s dangerous!   The train starts moving very quickly…either up or down…it’s hard to say.  But I can say, it’s happened hundreds of times over the years when an idea is hatched and enthusiasm is gaining momentum!

“We can do this…!”

“Let’s try this…!”

“We can call John and…!”

At this point, we’re all moving in 15 different directions and no one really knows what to do first and how to make all the magic happen.  At this point, we reign it in…and try to get a bit more realistic.

“Let’s not over-promise and then under-deliver.”  Let’s make sure what we want to do and what we can do is realistic and do-able.

That’s not to say new and giant ideas are not welcome and we shouldn’t dream big!  I adore bold ideas.  It’s one of the reasons I decided to start SD Events, LLC…I adore working with partners and projects that are new and need that kind of energy.  The more audacious the better and we will do whatever we it takes to make magic happen.

But let’s manage reality and make sure we are not over-promising.  When we want to pull off an event, depending on the scope of the event, it will take time, money and other resources.  Let’s not under deliver on what those resources are going to look like.

At the end of the day, when the bold ideas are going to bed and the brainstorming is coming to a close, what is realistic and what can we honestly deliver?  While I love new and out-of-the-box ideas, sometimes we have to reign it in and tell our partners, “I promise I will work hard to make our out-of-the-box ideas happen.”  Let’s not over-promise and under-deliver.
